Wasteland is an immediately captivating dystopian resistance origin story. It's written in present tense which is usually an automatic no for me (I find it annoying), but I kept reading anyway because I was intrigued--and I did actually forget about the verb tense with time as I was soon sucked completely into the story. The worldbuilding is believable and there but not overly drawn out. The characters are just plain fun and with enough depth that you begin to really feel for them.I have to say I feel a little peeved though at the rushed and unsatisfying last ten pages. I wasn't tracking my progress and didn't realize the book was over until it just was. It doesn't feel finished. In retrospect, the comic book references should have been a clue that the authors were essentially writing an origin story for a superhero. Which I'm not mad at, I just hope the next book isn't a long ways off.While this wouldn't be a satisfying read on it's own, it's an exciting take on a genre that isn't often featured in f/f writing (May Dawney's Survival Instincts and Meg Ludwa's Valkyrie are worth checking out if you enjoyed this book). Would recommend as long as you know this isn't really a standalone book, but rather a setup for what looks to be a very promising series. This was such a great read. It did start a little slow but I had no problem with that as I like the backstory. It picked up and became hard to put down felt like I could envision the characters.
